Unlawfully Remove Trees and Vegetation/Penalty
Our Position: support
Bill Number: H1793
Sponsor: Rep. Paul Luebke (D-Durham)
Legislative Session: 2007
As reported in several articles in the Raleigh News and Observer, a large number of trees have been cut down or otherwise illegally tampered with along interstate corridors across the state recently, sometimes to the endangerment of passing motorists.
Sierra Club supports legislation, introduced by Rep. Luebke, to help protect the public's trees.
This bill should discourage such illegal tree removal (without a permit from the DOT) by imposing stiffer penalties. And, if the tree is chopped, under this legislation, the billboard owner may also become ineligible for a permit to advertise.
