Navigation Basecamp at Mt. Rogers - An Educational Outings from the NC/VA Chapters of the Sierra Club
When:
Friday, Oct 10, 2008
through Sunday, Oct 12, 2008
Join us the afternoon of Oct. 10th for a 3 day Outing at Greyson Highlands State Park in Western Virginia
Details:
This educational basecamp outing will instruct you in the art of backcounty navigation. Our focus will be learning basic map & compass skills, plus an intro to GPS navigation, and how it fits into the overall picture. Practice makes perfect, so you will have the chance to hone your new skills during day-hikes up on the mountain.
We'll teach this class in a basecamp setting. Mt. Rogers is the perfect venue: it offers wide open expanses for map and compass work and has the "Bermuda Triangle of the AT" where North is South, and South runs North!
We'll also present a didactic piece on navigation using input from nature. Can you tell how many hours before sunset without a watch? How about figuring your latitude without a map or GPS? Can do you find the North Star at night? We can and we're glad to share in this discovery.
Participants will need to provide a $25 "refundable at the trailhead" deposit. In addition, other fees may be involved such as parking fees, campground fees, food, and incidental expenses. You will need to sign a standard club waiver as part of the application. Contact the leader for sign-up and more information.
