We're Planning Our Fall 2008/Spring 2009 Outing with Other Chapters

We are forming a "Sierra Club Atlantic Alliance" now with our fellow chapters in the east, namely the Virginia Chapter, the West Virginia Chapter, and the Chapters from Georgia and Florida. The NC Chapter/Atlantic Alliance are now starting to plan our Fall 2008/Spring 2009 Outings Calendar and are looking for feedback to gage interest in this new kind of outing with our new friends from other chapters. We hope to get traction and interest for these trips from NC membership and all our friends of the club across the southeast.

Please get back to Chris Plummer with your expression of interest for these trips, plus any ideas you may have for future outings you will like to see us run. We are always interested in your feedback! Note that these trips are in the planning stages, are subject to change or cancellation, and that we will run those trips proving to be most interesting and popular based upon feedback and leader preference.

October 10-12, 2008: Joint NC/VA Navigation Skills Basecamp Trip at Mt. Rogers VA. This is a basecamp trip and instruction trip where we'll teach navigation skills in the campground, then reinforce them with practice in the backcountry. Leaders from NC and VA will participate. Mt. Rogers, VA is the idea locale, as it has many wide open vistas for compass work, plus in the Big Wilson Creek area it has the "Bermuda Triangle of the AT" where north is south, and south runs north, always good for a map skills reality check. We'll be teaching basic map & compass skills, a bit on GPS navigation, and weather permitting some late night instruction on navigating with stars and other natural signs. February, 2009: Joint NC/VA/WV Winter Basecamp Trip. Come join us for the 2nd Annual Mt. Rogers Winter Basecamp Trip. We'll be teaching winter camping skills, enjoying group cooking, and have some awesome and instructive winter day hikes. This year we'll welcome fellow leaders and participants for our VA and WV Chapters of the Sierra Club. If we are luckily we'll see snow, and lots of it. Last year's trip it snowed 5" the first night in about 2 hours, I know as it all fell on my tent! If you are interested in this proposed outing please contact Chris Plummer.

April or May 2009: Joint NC/VA/WV "3 Rivers Paddling Trip": Join us for a basecamp paddling trip in WV on 3 wild and scenic rivers. This trip starts on a family farm, where we'll look at a wind power alternative energy system and enjoy good company and a group meal. Then we're off to paddle 3 rivers in 3 days, the New, the Greenbrier, and the Bluestone. If you are interested in this proposed outing please contact Chris Plummer.

April or May 2009: Joint NC/GA/FL "Tour of the Smokies": Come with us for a grand tour of the Smokies accompanied by leaders from our Atlantic Alliance. This trip is a 4-5 day backpacking trip with a high-country flavor, as we'll enjoy the high spots along the AT plus some beautiful creek basins.
