Celebrate National Public Lands Day with Us and Help Plant Trees

When:

Saturday, Sep 27, 2008
We will meet at the Sweetgum Picnic area at 9 A.M. and the project should be completed by 12 noon.

Details:

The theme for National Public Lands Day 2008 will focus on tree planting. Specifically, National Public Lands Day is spearheading an effort to commemorate the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) by planting one million trees between April 25th (National Arbor Day) and September 27th (National Public Lands Day). The CCC has been credited for planting approximately 2 -3 billion trees between 1933 and 1942.

National Public Lands Day is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands American's enjoy. In 2006, nearly 90,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, planted trees and plants, and removed trash and invasive plants.

Friday Sept. 26th we're taking the AMTRAK from North Carolina to the Washington, D.C. Metro, then biking to the park. The distance from the Metro to Greenbelt Park is less than 3 miles. On Saturday the 27th Sierra Club volunteers will assemble at the Sweetgum Picnic Area and begin planting the trees. Also on Saturday, NPLD Program Director, Robb Hampton, will arrive in a Toyota Prius to award the Sierra Club a $1000.00 check.
