Wildflower Hike - Bluff Mountain

When:

Saturday, May 17, 2008
Contact the leader

Details:

Bluff is one of the most ecologically significant natural areas in the Southeast. Hiking on Bluff, in just a few dozen steps you can walk from a Carolina hemlock forest to a dwarf red oak/white oak forest to a rare flat rock plant community. A broad, high plateau containing an unusual wetland, a southern Appalachian fen, adds to Bluff's unique character. The preserve is home to over 400 species of plants, including Indian paintbrush, Gray's lily, fringed gentian, spreading avens, and sundew. Bluff Mountain is known for its changing floral show from April through October that includes 25 endangered, rare, or threatened flowering plant species."  Easy to moderate trails – must use care in fragile areas like the fen.

To participate: (1) Fitness and experience to cover the distances, proper gear.  (2) Other terms and conditions at the top of the main NC Chapter Outings page for more details- (www.nc.sierraclub.org/outings).  Group size limited.  Leader pre-approval plus a $20 non-refundable deposit/fee required to help cover the area preservation fee to Nature Conservancy (with any remaining funds applied toward PPG leader training).
