Devil's Marbleyard & AT Section Backpack
When:
Friday, Feb 22, 2008
through Sunday, Feb 24, 2008
Contact leader
Details:
Devil’s Marbleyard has been described as “God’s Rock Garden”, a large area of 200 million year old sandstone blocks along a ridge. See the link below for photos and a hike description for the Devils Marbleyard section of the trail. Also see http://www.hikingupward.com/
This hike does not lend itself to a loop or in-and-out. We will pick up the AT at FSR #35 x BRP. Hike 2.7 to Marble Creek for Friday night. Saturday we hike the AT 2.3 to the junction of the DM trail, 2.8 up and back to the DM, and then the AT to Matt Creek for Saturday night. Sunday we hike the AT out to Hwy 501 and return home. 11.0 miles total, 7 +/- under packs. The hike up DM is strenuous but rewarding. There is substantial elevation gain/loss, most on the DM hike w/o a backpack.
To participate: (1) Fitness and experience to cover the distances, proper gear. (2) Other terms and conditions at the top of the main NC Chapter Outings page for more details. (www.nc.sierraclub.org/outings). Leader pre-approval plus $25 refundable at the trailhead deposit required.
NOTE: this trip did not run but we had good information for it if someone wants to do it again.
