Great Dismal Swamp Kayak/Camp

When:

Friday, Mar 28, 2008
through Sunday, Mar 30, 2008

Trip starts 12:30 p.m. Friday at the put-in.

Details:

Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is located primarily in southeast Virginia.  The refuge consists of 111,000 acres of forested wetlands with Lake Drummond’s 3,100 acres located in the heart of the refuge.  We will meet at 12:30 p.m. on Friday and paddle approximately 4.5 miles to our campsite in a field maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers.  There are “toilet facilities” but not potable water.  Saturday we will paddle appx 10 miles around the swamp edges of Lake Drummond.  Sunday we return home.

To participate: (1) Kayaks are recommended over canoes due to distance and potential wind factor on the lake. Must have storage capability to carry gear to the campsite; pfd is an absolute requirement; and suitable camping gear.  (2) Fitness and experience to cover the distances, self-rescue to a kayak is recommended.  (3) No pets.  (4) Other terms and conditions at the top of the main NC Chapter Outings page for more details. (www.nc.sierraclub.org/outings).

Leader pre-approval required plus $50 deposit refundable at the put-in. This is an unscouted trip.
