Along with several other environmental organizations, the Sierra Club filed suit against Duke Energy in federal district court on 07.16.08 in order to halt construction of the new Cliffside coal plant. Regulators need to determine that the plant will meet legal pollution limits. Per recent federal court ruling points and the stipulations of the Clean Air Act, Duke must cease construction until it meets the highest standards for hazardous air pollution. "Mercury pollution poses serious health risks -- especially to women and unborn babies," Molly Diggins, State Director of the North Carolina Sierra Club added. "A rushed analysis puts us all at risk. We need to be sure we have the best possible plan to protect our communities from mercury pollution." For more info, take a look at our Cliffside page and the press release announcing the suit.
Get Prepared! (for hurricanes)The 2008 hurricane season is officially underway. Joining together with PLAN!T Now, the Sierra Club is advocating for preparedness, foresight, and community planning to prevent human disaster in the upcoming storm cycle. This educational program provides the information needed to protect families and businesses in high risk areas. According to Carl Pope, Sierra Clubs Executive Director, There are steps individuals can take and decisions that communities can make to become safer. That is why we are so proud to work with Morgan Freeman and PLAN!TNOW to raise awareness of these actions and to help protect our natural defense system.
