Thursday, May 8: Tree Conservation Ordinance

Elizabeth O'Meara of the Foothills Group and tree expert David Lusk will give a PowerPoint presentation explaining the  proposed Tree Conservation Ordinance currently being considered by the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Planning Board. Elizabeth served on the committee that sent recommendations for a tree ordinance to the Planning Department last December. The City Council will review the ordinance in the near future.

Active Sierra Club support for this environmental ordinance may help assure its passing by both the City Council and the County Commissioners. Come learn more about the Ordinance!

Tuesday, May 13:  Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle Technology     

How can emerging technologies in the automobile industry address the rising cost of petroleum? The Piedmont Plateau Sierra Club Group in Greensboro will  hear James Poch, Executive Director of the non-profit Plug-in Hybrid Coalition, explain how the electrification of the automobile sector will benefit our nation’s economy, environment, and national security. Mr. Poch will have a plug-in hybrid prototype on hand.  Information on plug-in hybrids and the coalition may be found at www.plugincarolina.org.

This program will be held at Greensboro's environmental library, Kathleen Clay Edwards Family Branch in Price Park, 420 Price Park Drive, off  the section of Hobbs that runs between New Garden Road and Jefferson.  Arrive early to walk the trails in the park. From 7:00 - 7:30,  enjoy  refreshments and social time. The program begins at 7:30. 

Thursday, May 15: Foothills ExCom Planning Meeting

6:30 - 9 p.m.
Join us for pizza and a discussion of Group issues! We meet on the third Thursday of each month at the home of Fran Hawkins, 405 Lawndale Drive, Winston-Salem, NC (south of Country Club, between Silas Creek Parkway and Knollwood). Call Terry Powell, (336) 922-5704 for information.

Tuesday, May 27: Audubon Chapter Meeting

Ron Morris, retired Curator of the NC  Zoo, will speak about Birds of the Bering Sea. Meet at SciWorks; social time at 7 p.m.; program starts at 7:30 p.m.

May 31:  Yadkin River Cleanup

Meet at Roaring River Canoes at 10:30 a.m. Three sections of the Yadkin will be covered: Kerr Scott to Smooth Park, Smooth Park to Roaring River, and Roaring River to Ronda.
