Political Committee

Did you ever see an environmental problem that you wished you could change but had no idea how to start? Or maybe you started going to public hearings or talked to your government officials, but gave up due to the complexity of the process?

We've been there!

Because we know how complex the political process can be (and how essential it is that environmentalists understand it) one of the purposes of our group is to educate Sierra Club members and groups on the legislative process so they know who the decision makers are and when important decisions are made.

What we do

  • We do the homework on candidates and elections so you won't have to.
  • We research the environmental track records of candidates and incumbents and inform you, the voter, so that we get people in office who care about North Carolina's environment.
  • We encourage Sierra Club member participation on voluntary government task forces and commissions.
  • We help ensure that our public officials remain aware of environmental issues by meeting with them after they've been elected and tell them our concerns, by tracking their votes, and by asking about their environmental priority issues.
  • In 2008 we endorsed candidates for the Wake County Board of Commissioners and the North Carolina General Assembly.
  • In 2009 we will endorse candidates for the Cary and Raleigh Councils.
